Abu Dhabi Chamber invites its members to register for Board of Directors candidacy

The Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has invited all its members with valid membership to participate in registration for candidacy and voting to elect the board members of the Abu Dhabi Chamber for the year 2014 and for a period of 4 years. The elections will be held during the first half of June 2014.

The invitation came in a press release published by the Chamber on the announcement of opening registrations for Board Members candidates 2014 as of Sunday 30 March 2014 through 27 April 2014 according to Law No.27 of 2005.

His Excellency Mohammed Helal Al Muhairi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Chamber, said that Article (7) of the Law No.27 of 2005 states that the General Assembly is composed of all members of the Chamber, yet both attendance and the right to vote are limited to members who have paid their annual subscription fees, and that the General Assembly convenes once every four years to vote for a new Board of Directors, noting that it may be called to convene upon request from the Board or upon request from 20% of the totality.

The Director General explained that Article (9) of the Chamber’s Law points out that the Board Chairman of the Chamber is to send convocations for a meeting of the General Assembly at least one month prior to its holding; the convocation shall be published in one of the local newspapers. The meeting shall be deemed valid only if attended by a quarter of the totality of Chamber members who have paid their annual subscription fees. If the quorum for this meeting is not fulfilled, convocations shall be sent for another meeting to be held at least two weeks from the date of the previous meeting. Thereafter, the meeting shall be deemed valid, regardless of the number of attendees. Decisions shall be taken through the majority of votes of the attending members.

Al Muhairi noted that registration for candidates for the Chamber’s Board Membership will open on Sunday 30 March 2014 and closes on 27 April 2014, inviting those who desire to register for candidacy to approach the Office of Elections Affairs at the 2nd floor at the Chamber’s Tower in order to fill up registration forms and enclose the necessary documents according to Article (18) of the Chamber’s Law No.27 of 2005.

Al Muhairi added that the Chamber’s Law placed a number of conditions that the Board Member Candidate should be registered as member of the Chamber and having paid the entire annual subscription fees, have practiced commercial or industrial business for no less than three consecutive years, by virtue of a Commercial/Industrial License, enjoy a full legal capacity, good reputation and being free from criminal indictment, be not less than 21 calendar years of age, and have a business either registered in his own name or be a partner therein.

Regarding of the required documents for registration, Al Muhairi said that registration applications should be accompanied with a copy of a valid passport, a copy of the family book (for UAE national), a copy of the ID, a copy of a commercial membership renewed for three consecutive years + copies of its commercial licenses, a copy of the last renewed membership + its commercial licenses, three recent passport photos with dark background, and a Certificate of Good Conduct.
